KIBBUTZ HANNATON LAUNCHES PRE-ARMY MECHINA
There are currently about 40 pre-army programs (mechinot) operating in Israel that combine Jewish studies, with leadership training, army preparation, Land of Israel studies, field trips and volunteering. And since the fall, Israel has had its first Masorti mechina, housed at Kibbutz Hannaton. As Rabbi Yoav Ende, Executive Director of the Hannaton Educational Center, said, this is "the only mechina in the country where we are living, breathing, sleeping, learning and doing as Masorti Jews." For more information, go to http://eng.echannaton.org/hannaton-mechina.

SHARANSKY ASKED TO SOLVE KOTEL ISSUES
Following several consecutive months of highly publicized disturbances during Rosh Hodesh services at the Kotel in Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has turned to Natan Sharansky, Chairman of the Jewish Agency's Executive, in an effort to reach an agreement among all the parties that would end the dispute over the Western Wall’s religious character.

The appeal to the Jewish Agency head, whose governing board has a significant number of Conservative and Reform leaders from Israel and the Diaspora, comes after nearly a year of on-and-off protests over the restrictive way that religious services at the Kotel are regulated. Such restrictions have led repeatedly to women from the Women of the Wall organization being arrested for "disturbing the peace" at the holy site simply by trying to celebrate Rosh Hodesh wearing tallitot in the women’s section.
