Mercaz Urges Action for Israeli MIAs

In a clear-cut violation of international law, three Israeli soldiers - Sgt. Adi Avitan of Tiberias, Staff Sgt. Avraham Binyamin of Bnei Brak and Staff Sgt. Omer Suaed of Salma - were abducted by the Hizbullah on October 7th while on operational duty along the border fence in the Dov mountain range along Israel's border with Lebanon. In addition, Israeli businessman Elchanan Tannenbaum, who holds the rank of Colonel in the IDF Reserves, was abducted at the same time while on a business trip in Europe and is also believed held by the Hizbullah.

Chairing the Committee on the Israeli MIAs for the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Evelyn Seelig has called on the Jewish community to keep up the pressure on the international community for the release of the captives. "We must continue our letter writing campaign to UN Secretary General Kofi Anan and to President Bill Clinton, urging both leaders to use all channels to the governments of Lebanon and Syria to halt the activities of Hizbullah and to assist in the timely release of the soldiers. We must also continue to send letters of support to the families of the soldiers and Elchanan Tannenbaum in order to remind them that we are with them at this difficult time. Please send your letters of support in care of Yaron Sideman, Consul for Information, Consulate of Israel, 800 Second Ave., New York, NY 10017."

"Finally, we must not forget the other Israeli MIAs: Zachary Baumel, Zvi Feldman and Yehuda Katz, who have been missing since 1982, and Ron Arad, who disappeared 14 years ago after bailing out of his plane over Lebanon. We need to continue reciting the special (mishebayrach) prayers and holding the public vigils until all the missing are returned to their homes."
