Bridging Dreams and Reality

Jacob dreams the first dream in the Torah. He is alone, the sun is setting, and the light is waning. In that dream Jacob understands that he is not alone, and he finds renewed strength to shape reality for the better.

Our dreams shape who we are, and our realities shape and change our dreams.

In the great darkness, God says to Jacob, “and all the families of the earth shall be blessed through you … and I will guard you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you …”

What dreams would we like to have shape us and our society? Some people’s dreams can be other people’s nightmares. The story of Jacob’s ladder emphasizes a scale of values: being a blessing, protective care, returning home. This week Masorti/Conservative rabbis from around the world will gather at the RA convention, reminding ourselves that we are not alone, and together shaping our realities and our dreams. May we take action to strengthen one another and to bring the hostages home. May our dreams be a blessing for ourselves and for all the families of the earth.
